Gondwana-in-Toowoomba- Artist Statement
Gondwana-in-Toowoomba-

The frame for this partition was made by Heath Pakeman. The curving dark blue strip featured in the first, second and fourth panel is a map of the Main Range. At the middle and top of the second panel and the bottom of the fourth panel we see the results of rifting between Australia and Antarctica on the ocean floor. Six maps of the globe are featured across the work. Moving from left to right the six maps depict the changing face on the globe from the late Triassic period to the late Cretaceous period. The top section of the second panel features a canopy shot of the remnant rainforest at the Boyce Gardens.

This 4-part screen is designed around the cladogram (Time Map or Family Tree) for the Vascular Plants - the Pteridophytes (Ferns), Gymnosperms (Coniferous Plants) and Angiosperms (Flowering Plants) that were present in Gondwanaland 65 MYA.
The flowering plants include both the monocotyledonous plants (eg the Lily Family) and the dicotyledonous plants (eg Proteaceae, Myrtaceae, Fabaceae and Moraceae).
The families that were present in Gondwanaland are with us still, although the species may be different. Extant species from the Boyce Gardens are used as examples of the many families present in the garden. Material for every family was not available during the last year but we hope to rectify those omissions later on.
Illustrations of the various families are provided from the drawings and paintings made by the artists.

Screen One (at left side) shows the ferns (eg Families Aspleniaceae, Adiantaceae), conifers (Family Araucariaceae) and monocotyledonous plants (eg Families Dioscoreaceae, Liliaceae, Smilacaceae).
Screen Two shows the older of the angiosperm families - eg Families Ranunculaceae, Proteaceae, Pittosporaceae, Bignoniaceae.
Screen Three shows the families that developed later - eg Families Myrtaceae, Malvaceae, Sapindaceae, Violaceae.
Screen Four shows the most recently developed families - eg Families Celastraceae, Fabaceae, Vitaceae, Moraceae
